Are you in the mood for a lovely meal? A respite from a busy day? Served in a leisurley setting, with real China and cloth napkins, without spending more than $10 a piece (including appetizer and dessert?) head for Shalimar India Restaurant in downtown Portsmouth. Here each item has it's own flavor and distinctive appearance. You can tell the Pandoori from the Pakora, even with your eyes closed.
The decor has abdundant dark red set off with glints of gold and lavish illustrations from the subcontinent's ethnic literature. Here, you can sit back, relax and enjoy the many delicious offerings, including over 56 entrees. For starters, there are more thana dozen appetizers ranging from Samosas- spicy turnovers stuffed with vegetables or minced lamb, to Chicken Tikka, cooked on skewers in the tandoor, a charcoal fueled clay oven that gives some of the meat dishes their names. The best bet is to simply order the vegetarian platter or the non-vegetarian platter and dig in.
Entrees include vegetarian speciailities, as well as chicken, lamb, beef and seafood dishes. All meals are accompanied by two sauces -
an onion chutney that takes the roof off your mouth, or for the meek a tamarin that's tangy sweet. Don't forget the bread! try the Poori, a deep fried puffy bread, hallow inside. Tear off a rich piece and soak up the juices!
Luncheon specials start at $6.95 and range from vegetarian to chicken, lamb, shrimp and fish offerings that are served with fluffy basmati rice and a cup of soup of the day.
